WORKSHOP 2009 Neotropical secondary forest
regeneration: Integrating ecological process across
multiple scales 28 - 30 October, 2009 |

Introduction The rapid loss of old-growth tropical forests around the world signals
an urgent need to understand and forecast the importance of secondary
(regrowth) forests to conserve biodiversity and critical ecosystem services.
Present and future societies and economies will depend on the natural capital
in secondary forests, which are rapidly becoming the dominant forests across
the tropics. Understanding the complex effects of landscape and regional
changes on secondary forest regeneration requires a comprehensive,
comparative, multi-investigator approach across different regions, geographic
settings, and landscape types.

University of Mexico (UNAM), Campus Morelia, Mexico, on 28-30 October, 2009
to: i) form an international research network, ii) develop an integrated,
internationally-based research and training program, and iii) synthesize the
state of the art and future research directions on secondary neotropical
forests. Participants include researchers and post-graduate students coming
from seven countries. The workshop is co-organized by Miguel Martinez-Ramos and Horacio Paz
from the Center for Research in Ecosystems (CIEco-UNAM) in
