Projects of the Macroecology lab are focused on the central question of community ecology, Elton’s limited membership: Of all species than can potentially occur in a given place, Why do only a small proportion of them actually coexist?

This question is in turn closely related to the central quest in biodiversity science, Hutchinson’s Santa Rosalia question: Why are there so many species of organisms?

The possible answers have enormous implications for community ecology, macroecology, biogeography, and conservation biology.  Our group has examined these implications from all those perspectives.  In doing so, we conduct field and laboratory work and apply analytical tools with strong geographic and statistical components.
